Yuck!

Via Daddy Bear, we learn of a new and utterly revolting development in the food industry.

Anyone up for some poop burgers?

Japanese scientist Mitsuyuki Ikeda from the Okayama Laboratory certainly doesn't believe in human waste.

He thinks that's perfectly good protein you're sending out to sea, and he's found a way to extract it, mix it with steak sauce and create a fecal feast fit for a king.

And despite the downside of having to add soya to bind it all together, Prof Ikeda thinks there's no reason why we shouldn't all tuck into his turd burgers.

Why would he even think of it, you might ask.

Because Tokyo Sewage asked him to. Tokyo is swimming in sewage mud, it seems, and there's only one way it can save itself and that's eat it.

Prof Ikeda found the mud was loaded with protein due to the high bacteria content. Combine it with reaction enhancer and put it in a magical machine called an "exploder" and artificial steak comes out the other end.

. . .

"Initial tests have people saying it even tastes like beef," Digital Trends reports.

There's more at the link. Here's a video report on the . . . stuff.

As I noted over at Daddy Bear's place, this reminds me of a very old joke that was told (and told, and told . . . ) in the South African Defense Force:

Recruit: "Sergeant, the food in this chow hall's not fit for human consumption!"

Sergeant: "Of course it's not - it's for recruits, not humans!"

I have nothing but expletives to say to the man who thought this worth researching.

This may also be one of the stepping stones for long range space exploration.

There are sooooo many one-liners that could go with this story, I just don't know where to begin. Best, I think, to just not go there.

Anybody else notice that the bag of "meat" he pulled from the fridge is labeled "Sh*t Burger" in English?

I had the same thought as Tim D actually...

Considering some of the crap we consume now, this is the next logical step. Consider the fertilizers we use to grow vegetables, or what those tasty mushrooms grew on.

I understand the queasiness that comes with seeing this--I feel it too. But if the human race continues the add more consumers to the planet, this will will become more palatable, if you will.

Something tells me that joke has been told in every army since Oog figured out how to sharpen a stick, BRM.

The thought about using it in space travel occurred to me too. But to be perfectly honest, that goes on the ever growing list of reasons I'm staying on this mudball.
